Originally scheduled to cover 130 km, the stage was shortened to 59 km due to mudslides that made the descent of the Cormet de Roselend impassable. Only the final 33 km climb to Val Thorens remained. All intermediate mountain points, sprint points, and time bonuses on the cancelled section were withdrawn, leaving only those awarded at the finish in Val Thorens.
